Conservation - Why bother?

Welcome to our 2012 GATE programme at Freyberg High School. This year we are exploring the question Is the money we spend on conservation worth it? Or, looking at it another from another angle Is there a price we can place on conservation? Over the year our group of GATE Year 9 and 10 studets will develop their own inquiry within these overaching questions. One of the starting points to all of this is to ask yourself and your families, What does conservation mean to you? What value do you place on it and why?

  1. Conservation means alot to my family and I. I suppose its because we want to preserve it for future generations, to be able to have clean air and beautiful nature all around us. Also New Zealand prides itself on its uniqueness and tourism. :)

  2. Conservation is something that both sides of my family have always thought is important, for a number of reasons, first and foremost being so that we can keep our unique fauna and flora for our grandchildren, who will then repeat the process. It is also important to me because it keeps New Zealand on the map.

  3. Conservation for me is very important if we want our future children to have the same opportunities as we do right now.

  4. My family and I don't really talk about conservation, unless an issue comes up in the news, or me or my brother bring up something that we have been talking about at school. Now that I'm part of this extension, I've been thinking about conservation more, and how it affects us. We need it for the health and well being of our country, and also for ourselfs.

  5. I asked Mum why she thought conservation was important, and she said that we only have one planet. Ever since people have come to New Zealand, several species have become extinct, and native forests have been pulled down without thought for the ecosystem it supports. We have been far to careless over the past, and if we don't change our ways, we will have incredibly limited resources in the years to come. She says that we need to live in harmony with nature - protect species that need to be protected, and only take what we need from the environment. I completely agree. We need to save our planet, so that future generations can live with as much ease as we do now,and so they don't have to be the ones to try fix the mistakes we made.

  6. Conservation is very important to our family although we may not mention it much. Conservation to us is looking after the world we live in to protect and support native species of animals and plants etc. Dad said that we are stewards to our planet and so we should respect it and do our part. Our family loves the out doors and we go camping every year, we would hate to see the lovely clean green environment that we've always had disappear. So every little bit counts from picking up our rubbish to planting trees.

  7. Conservation should be important to the whole of New Zealand. We are knowen for our beautiful landscapes and wide range of endangered birds. Why should we let this all go to waste? I personally think that what we have is to beautiful to lose, everything is to precious to waste. My family all shares in the same thoughts and opinions that we only have one planet so why are we destroying it?
